DVD Packaging

This summer since I've had a lot of free time I bought a few dvds of movies that I hadn't watched that everyone says you must watch, its as though its part of your education. This film was first in a long line of classic/cult films I had not seen.

I bought Reservoir Dogs collectors edition just because of how cool the packaging looks. I like these special editions because you get a modern interpretation on a classic. So although the film is untouched, developments in technology enable designers to pull off stuff like this. The outer casing is metal and is shaped like a petrol can. I already knew this linked to the movie anyway because I heard about it so much. My guess is that this will be a full colour flexo print job. Due to the nature of the stock and artwork I don't believe this could have been done any other way and be as cost effective. I would rule out screen printing on this job due to the volume needed. I think the card packaging would be a 1 colour litho print project. That gives us the rich orange colour of the fingerprint and also a tint for the background.

Inside the packaging also lives up to my expectations. This DVD's are contained in this book of matches which again looks cool but has been cleverly thought through. I just wish there was a little more attention to detail by adding the strike paper texture on the pack or something. You also get these like quote cards emblazoned with the graphic style of the movie. The disc would have been printed using a full colour offset litho print process. This is probably the best way to achieve a nice looking image with depth, with the flexibility of adding graphics also.

Little things could have made this much better but I was happy with what I got for the £6 I spent. All I need to do now is watch it.
